What Our Customers Are Saying
Building decks in North Vancouver
The North Shore is the wettest and steepest part of Metro Vancouver, and both facts matter for decks. Rainfall here runs substantially higher than on the south side of the inlet, which puts more sustained load on waterproofing, flashing and drainage than anywhere else we work. A detail that would pass unnoticed in Richmond will find you out in Lynn Valley.
Terrain is the other half of it. Lynn Valley, Deep Cove and the slopes above Lonsdale produce lots where a deck can stand well above grade at one end. That means taller posts, engineered footings, multi-level layouts, and guards meeting the higher requirement that applies to elevated structures.
Heavy tree cover adds a third factor. Shade, moss and organic debris mean surfaces stay wet longer here, so slip resistance and ease of cleaning carry more weight than they would on an open lot in Delta.
We work throughout Lonsdale, Upper Lonsdale, Lynn Valley, Deep Cove, Edgemont, Capilano, Seymour and Blueridge.
For North Vancouver specifically, composite makes most sense on open-air decks where water drains through the board gaps to the ground below. If there is enclosed space underneath, composite alone will not protect it and a waterproof membrane system is the correct choice instead.
Permits in North Vancouver. Most deck projects in North Vancouver require a building permit. Which rules apply depends on how high the deck sits above grade, whether it is attached to the house, and the setbacks that apply in your zone. Requirements and processing times are set by the municipality and do change, so we confirm the current position directly with the city on every project rather than working from memory. We prepare and submit the application as part of the build.
