Rain, leaves, and temperature drops can do a number on your deck. In Metro Vancouver, where the wet season hits hard, fall maintenance is more than just a good idea—it’s a must. Here’s how to get your deck ready for the months ahead.
1. Clear off debris and moss
Start by sweeping off all leaves, dirt, and branches. Wet leaves can trap moisture and cause rot. If you see moss or algae, scrub it off with a mild cleaner or deck wash. It keeps the surface from getting slippery and helps your wood breathe again.
2. Inspect boards, railings, and fasteners
Look for loose nails, wobbly railings, or soft spots on boards. Small problems turn into big repairs once the rain sets in. Tighten, replace, or reinforce anything that feels weak.

3. Clean before sealing
Pressure wash the surface (gently, around 1,500–2,000 PSI) or use a deck cleaner to lift up dirt and old finishes. Let it dry completely before sealing or staining—usually 24 to 48 hours.
4. Reseal to block moisture
A quality water-repellent seal or stain keeps your deck from soaking up moisture. Choose one with UV protection to guard against fading too. Even composite decks benefit from a surface wash and seal every couple of years.
5. Check drainage and airflow
Make sure water flows away from the house and that nothing is blocking deck gaps or drains. Poor airflow or standing water can lead to mold or rot under the surface.
6. Cover or store furniture
If you’ve got patio furniture or BBQ gear out, cover it or store it for the season. It’ll help keep your deck cleaner and make spring maintenance easier.
