Glass vs. Aluminum vs. Cable Railings in North Vancouver

North Vancouver homeowners often build decks on elevated lots with mountain and inlet views — which makes the railing choice more impactful than almost anywhere in Metro Vancouver. The railing is the frame around that view. Choose wrong and you’ve blocked it. Choose right and you’ve amplified it.

VS Deck & Rail installs custom railing installation across North Vancouver — glass, aluminum, and cable systems. Here’s how they compare for North Van’s specific conditions.

Glass Railings: Maximum View, Modern Look

Glass railings — frameless and semi-frameless systems — are the top choice when you have a view worth protecting. North Vancouver has more of these properties than almost anywhere in Metro Vancouver: mountain-facing lots in Lynn Valley and Grouse Woods, inlet-facing decks in Deep Cove and the waterfront neighbourhoods.

Best for: Properties with mountain or inlet views where an unobstructed sightline is the priority.

Style options: Frameless (glass panels held by base clamps — completely open look) and semi-frameless (posts at intervals with panels between). Frameless is the more popular choice for view properties.

Maintenance: Wipe down salt spray and rain marks quarterly. Glass is easy to keep clean and doesn’t corrode. The hardware (stainless steel clamps and posts) is designed for coastal exposure.

Cost: Glass railings typically cost more than aluminum — your VS Deck estimator will provide a site-specific quote based on linear footage and panel configuration.

Code note: All glass railing systems installed in North Vancouver must meet BC Building Code load requirements — 0.75 kN/m (distributed) and 1 kN point load on the top rail. We engineer and install to these specs.

Aluminum Railings: The Durable Workhorse

Aluminum railings are the most versatile option — they work on any deck style, come in 20+ powder-coat colours, and require essentially zero maintenance. For North Vancouver’s wet climate, aluminum outperforms iron or steel alternatives that rust over time.

Best for: Any deck where budget matters, or where a clean, consistent look is preferred over a transparent one.

Lifespan: Powder-coated aluminum railings are designed to last 50+ years with no painting, sealing, or treating required. The powder coat resists salt air, UV fading, and impact.

Style options: Horizontal or vertical pickets, top-rail profiles in square or round, and a wide range of colours from black to white to custom-matched to your home’s trim.

Cost: Generally the most cost-effective installed option per linear foot. A good choice when you have a large deck perimeter to rail or want to keep the project on budget.

Cable Railings: Industrial-Coastal Style

Cable railings use horizontal stainless steel cables tensioned between posts — a look that’s become popular in contemporary North Vancouver builds, particularly in newer areas and mountain-adjacent neighbourhoods.

Best for: Contemporary homes, mountain-facing decks, homeowners who want a modern industrial-coastal aesthetic.

Important note: Cable requires posts at closer intervals than frameless glass — typically every 3–4 feet. This means more vertical elements in your view compared to a frameless glass system. If preserving the sightline is the priority, glass will outperform cable on that measure.

Maintenance: Stainless steel cables should be checked annually for tension, especially after North Vancouver’s wet seasons. Cables stretch slightly over time and should be re-tensioned as needed.

Cost: Typically between aluminum and glass, depending on post material (aluminum posts vs. stainless) and cable count per panel.

What to Consider for North Vancouver Specifically

Elevated lots: Many North Van properties have decks 6–10 feet off the ground. At that height, engineering requirements for posts and stringers are more demanding — your railing system needs to be properly anchored to the framing, not just surface-mounted.

Salt air near the inlet: Properties in Deep Cove, Dollarton, and along the waterfront should avoid iron or ungalvanized steel hardware. Aluminum posts, stainless cable, and marine-grade glass hardware are the right choices for those exposures.

Strata and HOA guidelines: Some North Vancouver strata buildings and planned developments have design guidelines that restrict railing styles or colours. Verify with your strata council before ordering materials.

Permit offices: North Vancouver has two separate municipal jurisdictions — the District of North Vancouver and the City of North Vancouver — each with their own Building Department. VS Deck & Rail handles permit submissions for both. We’ve built decks across both jurisdictions and know the process.
